MESD Facility Services Department is responsible for the daily Operations and Maintenance functions of the school district.

The Facilities Department is comprised of multiple departments, including: Operations & Maintenance, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Safety & Security, Transportation, Pony Mail Services, Supplies and Records Management. All are vital components to assure that the district’s facilities are a safe and healthy environment for our students, staff and community.

 

Position:  CUSTODIAN I - Swing Shift

Department:  Facility Services

Reports to:  Supervisor, Facility Services

Classification/Range:  Classified/Range 8

Schedule:  260 days per year, 8 hours per day

Projected Interview Timeline:  Interviews offered on a rolling basis

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

 

Contributes to the appearance and operations of the school or other district facilities by cleaning and maintaining assigned buildings, and performing maintenance and operations duties. MESD custodians are an integral part of maintaining safe, clean, and healthy environments for our students and staff. Shift hours are 3:00pm - 11:30pm during the school year (approximately August 15 - June 15). Building assignments are located throughout Multnomah County and are subject to change.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Positions assigned to the Custodian I classification are distinguished from the Custodian II classification by job duties which may include cleaning floors, restrooms, or windows; replacing lights and doing light maintenance; moving supplies and setting up chairs; and operating building security, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Cleans lavatories, including toilets and sinks, washes mirrors, walls and dispensers to ensure proper sanitary conditions and good appearance.  Checks and fills towel, soap, and sanitary napkin dispensers.
  2. Empties and cleans wastebaskets and disposes of waste.
  3. Sweeps, vacuums, mops, buffs and waxes tile floors, carpets and walkways.
  4. Washes windows and glass throughout the facility to assure good appearance and visibility.
  5. Cleans assigned classroom desks, sinks and countertops according to established procedures.
  6. Washes, vacuums, and dusts furniture, drinking fountains, window sills, fixtures, baseboards, chalkboards and the like.
  7. Operates, monitors and reports irregularities in the operation of security, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  8. Secures building according to building policy at close of shift.
  9. Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as needed.
  10. Assists with room setups and moves furniture, equipment, etc. as needed.
  11. Provides assistance to other custodians and school staff, as assigned.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES: 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma, or G.E.D., and six months of general building cleaning experience; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed primarily within an office building or school building. The work involves physical ability in cleaning and occasional lifting of objects in excess of 60 lbs.  Employees are exposed to cleaning chemicals and light machines such as vacuum cleaners.
